Crusader Period (1099—1291)

Embroidery: Shayma Waheidi [Bir Seb’a], Gaza

On 15 July 1099, the First Crusade reached Palestine and entered the port city of Acre,

massacring Jewish and Muslim civilians and pillaging or destroying mosques and the city itself. As a result of this conquest, several small Crusader states were created, notably the Kingdom of Jerusalem.  This lasted until 1291 CE, when its original and last possession – Acre – was taken by the Mamluks.
